Hasselbaink Pinpoints Summer Signing As Chelsea’s “Weakest Link” Against City

Chelsea legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has heavily criticised Marc Cucurella after his performance against Manchester City on Thursday evening.

The Spaniard, who cost £62m when he was signed from Brighton in the summer, was at fault for Riyad Mahrez’s winner, whilst his all-round performance was rather disappointing, and Hasselbaink didn’t hold back when he was asked about the player:

“He didn’t have a really good game at all, he was the weakest link. I think Chelsea played really well, but the weakest link was Cucurella and Man City acknowledged that. It’s a problem. He’s come from Brighton and not had the best start and today you could see it. I still think he wants to defend and wants to get better, but it has to happen quick.”

Cucurella has actually looked pretty solid since the World Cup, and he didn’t do a lot wrong in the first half in the defeat to City. However, he was very poor after the interval.

The 24-year-old was turned inside and out by Bernardo Silva on one occasion, whilst his failure to track Mahrez’s run ultimately cost Chelsea the game.

You do try to hold back from judging a player too soon after they have joined a new club but, at the moment, it looks like the Blues may have massively overpaid for Cucurella.
