Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso has come in for criticism over the past year for his poor defensive qualities but there has never been any doubt about his ability in the final third of the pitch.

The Spaniard scored the winning goal against Newcastle at the weekend, and he has been showing off his superb ball striking in training this week too. To make things interesting, goalkeeper Willy Caballero reduced the Spaniard’s target to the top right-hand corner for a free-kick. Alonso duly struck the free-kick with pinpoint accuracy:

Alonso has scored a number of free-kicks in matches over the years, and if he plays against Ajax this evening, he will surely be the first man in line if it is on the right-hand side of the goal.

Emerson Palmieri is back in training so the Spanish international may not start, but he is certainly given manager Frank Lampard something to think about with his performances in recent games.
