Chelsea are currently negotiating to sign Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez but, with the deal expected to cost a club-record fee, there are still no guarantees that a bid will be successful.
Writing in his article about N’Golo Kante’s potential contract renewal, The Athletic‘s David Ornstein also listed four additional midfield targets that the Blues are considering:
🚨 Chelsea making positive progress in talks over new deal for N’Golo Kante. Not done but now likely 31yo extends, amid rival interest. #CFC also expected to sign at least 1 midfielder in Jan/summer; Fernandez & Bellingham high among options @TheAthleticFC https://t.co/ll6bciQ2Kj

Orenstein claims that Chelsea do have “concrete interest” in Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, while they are keeping tabs on the likes of Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, West Ham’s Declan Rice and Southampton’s Romeo Lavia as well.
None of the names will come as a surprise to those who have been following the transfer rumour mill over the past few months but it does appear as if an overhaul of the midfield is a key priority for the club.
Fernandez is seemingly the number one target as things stand, and we shall see how negotiation progress with Benfica in the coming days.
