Chelsea have enquired about Real Sociedad holding midfielder Martin Zubimendi, according to journalist Simon Phillips.
The Spanish international plays the anchor man role, much like Jorginho, and fans on Twitter believe he could be the upgrade in midfield the Blues have been looking for:
Oh my Goddddd….. if we get him we are winning the league next year

Gone are the days when we only went for flashy names. This is now proper recruitment. Being linked here gives me nothing but hope.

Would be a great signing if we can get him for a decent price

Let's get him already

He could actually tackle, hold the ball well and makes line breaking passes a lot .. something Chelsea lacks gravely and the best part is he’ll potentially save us from watching Jorginho’s old man pace display for seasons & beyond

Zubimendi is only 23 years of age so he has a lot to learn, but he does possess the technical and physical attributes that manager Graham Potter needs to play in his midfield.
Both Barcelona and Manchester United have also weighed up moves for the Spaniard after considering him as a potential replacement/alternative for Frenkie de Jong.
In terms of cost, Zubimendi has a €60m (£53m) release clause in his contract, and Real Sociedad are likely to ask Chelsea to match it if they are serious about snapping up the player. At the moment, it appears the Blues haven’t gone any further than registering their interest but that may soon change.
