Chelsea Give Defender Inter Experience

Chelsea have agreed to send young right back Wallace on a season-long loan to Italian giants Inter Milan, in order to give the defender first team experience at an elite club when his original club already has senior players at his position.

The Blues have been encouraging the younger players to gain experience through loan deals, and that policy has worked wonders for the club over the past few seasons. Whether it is a player who has made his way through the youth ranks at the academy, or a new signing from another side, the club has been supportive of potential talents, and does not shy away from sending them on loan. Elite clubs often face the dilemma of keeping the younger players on the bench to give them a few minutes on the pitch if the side are winning, but Chelsea have enough squad depth to have experienced players on and off the pitch on the bench. The new signings in Marco van Ginkel and Andre Schurrle will add to the tally of senior players, reducing the chances of youngsters to get minutes under their belts.

Wallace is a youngster who started his career back in native Brazil, where he began playing the game at Fluminense as a youth player in 2005. The 19-year old developed his game through the years and finally ended his stint in the academy in 2011, when he was offered his first professional contract. The player readily accepted the deal, and made his senior debut for the club at the age of 17. He played 21 league matches for the club in 2012, scoring one goal in the process, before his talent was noticed by Chelsea.

The Blues signed the right back in December, 2012, with an agreement to send him back to Fluminense for the rest of the campaign on loan. He made an appearance for Chelsea in this pre-season campaign, and managed to impressed new boss Jose Mourinho, who sent him back to his old club.

According to the The Evening Standard, Inter confirmed the agreement on their official website.

The statement read, “FC Internazionale welcomes Wallace Oliviera dos Santos to the club.”

“The paperwork on the Brazilian defender’s loan move to Inter from Chelsea has been completed and the documents submitted to the Lega Serie A.”
