Chelsea right-back Reece James has confirmed that he has undergone surgery after providing an update on his Instagram account.
The defender did not confirm what type of operation he had but he emphasised it was only a minor setback in his recovery:
James sustained ankle ligament damage playing for England’s Under 20s last month, but at the time, it wasn’t deemed serious enough for him to have surgery.
The 19-year-old has been seen back in light training, but it appears his comeback will be delayed, with it now being unlikely that he will be fit for the start of the season.
James will want to impress new manager Frank Lampard, who gave a number of young players their chance in a recent friendly against Bohemians.
It will be frustrating for the fullback with many having tipped him to break into the first-team squad this campaign following a superb season out on loan at Wigan.
