The situation surrounding the German international is a bit strange. Some reports suggested that Chelsea would only sanction a loan move if he signed a new deal due to the fact that he is less than two years remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge. Having refused to do so the centre-back opted to stay.
However, there have also been claims that Rudiger would have been allowed to leave, irrespective of his contract situation, with it being suggested that he backed out of a loan move to Tottenham due to fears over a fan backlash.
