What City’s CAS Appeal Verdict Means For Chelsea’s Champions League Qualification Hopes

Manchester City’s successful appeal against their two-year ban from European competitions means the race for the top four will go right down to the wire.

If the suspension had been upheld, Chelsea would have had a comfortable five-point gap to sixth-placed Wolves but with City now eligible for next season’s Champions League, the margin for error is now very small.

The Blues’ destiny is still in their own hands. If they win their final three games of the campaign, they will seal qualification for Europe’s top competition.

However, after Frank Lampard‘s side play relegated Norwich tomorrow night, their last two fixtures are tricky. They face a trip to Anfield on Wednesday week, and while Liverpool have already been crowned champions, they are still focused on achieving a Premier League points record.

Chelsea then play Wolves on the final day. While the Midlands club’s own hopes of Champions League football have been all but extinguished by the lifting of City’s ban, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men will still be focused on Europa League qualification.
