Tough To Win the League – Mourinho

There are six teams involved in the title race this season, and that number can be increased substantially if you count the likes of Southampton and Everton as being able to lift the title come the end of the season. Both teams are currently above Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, who are both contenders for the league this season.

This is in stark contrast to other leagues around the world, where usually only two teams compete against each other for the title. La Liga has been a two-horse race between Real Madrid and Barcelona for the last 9 seasons with only Valencia breaking the tradition in the 2003-04 season.

Elsewhere in Germany, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have been dominating the Bundesliga in recent years, the same two teams who made it to the Champions League final last May.

Although the Premier League title has involved Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United fighting it out over the last few years, the big spending of Spurs coupled with the emergence of Liverpool and table-toppers Arsenal has meant this is one of the most open seasons in England ever.

Mourinho believes no other league in the world is capable of providing such intense competition for the top places as the English Premier League. One win or loss can result in significant changes as to the club’s position in the league table.

According to London24, the former Real Madrid manager also claims that winning the league this season will be a bigger achievement than the 2004-05 league success – the first league title for Chelsea in 50 years.

He said, “Would it be a greater achievement? Yes, I think so. To win when the club is not historically a winner is a hard step, so 2004-05 was a hard step to make. But to win the title this year would be a bigger achievement. The competition is different, the teams are different. There were three teams fighting for the title and now we are six.”

He added, “The difference between the three and the rest were a big distance. In this moment, the distance between the six is short and the distance between the next three-four is also short. Nobody knows what can happen and maybe difference between success and not success will be the difference of a couple of points.”

Mourinho also believes that the Premier League enjoys advantage over other leagues since there is no duopoly existing like in Spain or Germany. He said, “We have the competition that every country wants to have and nobody has. The coach of Getafe was saying this competition has no sense – it’s all Real Madrid, Barcelona [even if] Atletico Madrid is coming a bit.”

“Felix Magath in Germany was saying Bayern Munich and Dortmund shouldn’t play in the Bundesliga, because it is a competition of two. In Portugal it’s the same. Everyone is praying for Sporting to go up and make it a league of three. Here we have a fantastic league. We should enjoy it,” he added.

He continued, “If we were top of the league and the second were 10 points after me, I would love it. But I love the fact that you win a match you go to second. You lose a match you drop from second to sixth.”

Chelsea won 3-1 against Southampton on Sunday to remain at second place in the table with 27 points, although there are still four points behind league leaders Arsenal.
