It’s incredible to think that last night’s 7-1 win against Grimsby Town was the first appearance for Reece James in a Chelsea shirt. The hype surrounding the 19-year-old was so high that it was difficult to see how he could live up to expectations.
With a goal and assist to his name on the night, the right-back showed everyone why there was so much talk about him. Supporters on Twitter are now hoping he gets game time in the Premier League:
Exactly my thoughts, that’s a finish of a CF. Calm, collected and great accuracy. Not trying to overhype him, But i think this lad can play anywhere on the pitch.

Of course, it can be easy to get too far ahead of ourselves. James was playing against fourth-tier opposition, and he will have bigger challenges ahead of him facing Premier League opponents.
Even so, his attacking mindset and his ability on the ball, make him a serious rival for Cesar Azpilicueta. The Spaniard has struggled for form this season, and while James may not displace him straight away, the teenager will be waiting in the wings to stake his claim for a first-team place.
