Chelsea attacking midfielder Mason Mount put in another impressive display during the 2-2 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach in the pre-season friendly yesterday afternoon.

Manager Frank Lampard praised the 20-year-old’s performance following the match, and suggested that the midfielder has given him a selection headache ahead of next week’s season opener against Manchester United:

“I’m really happy with how he’s trained and his status within the group. The players recognise quality instantly, but they also recognise work rate and character.”

“Mason’s got all of those and he’s given me a problem. Ross Barkley’s also had a good pre-season and Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be back later on.”

“It’s good because they’re all adaptable and can play in a variety of positions amongst themselves. I couldn’t ask for more from what Mason’s done.”

Mount’s trickery won the second penalty, which Ross Barkley cooly slotted away four minutes from time to rescue a draw in Germany. Fans on Twitter were praising the England Under 21 international’s form:

Lampard tried playing both Barkley and Mount in the second half at Borussia Park, but the general consensus is that only one of them will start at Old Trafford next Sunday.

After an outstanding preseason, it would be very harsh on Barkley, in particular, if he misses out against United, and the 25-year-old is the favourite ahead of Mount currently to be named in the starting eleven.
