The Five Worst Chelsea Transfers Of The Premier League Era

Mistakes can be made in the transfer market and Chelsea have been no strangers to making errors when it comes to signings in the Premier League era.

In recent years, the likes of Radamel Falcao, Danny Drinkwater and Fernando Torres have all flopped following their moves to Stamford Bridge but we are going to go further back into the archives for this list of players.

By today’s standards, some of these players did not cost a great deal, but if we take into account inflation, some of these were costly mistakes.

Press the “next page” as we look at five of the worst transfers Chelsea have made in the last 28 years.

Winston Bogarde

The Dutchman joined the Blues in the year 2000 from Barcelona, and he signed a four-year contract, worth a reported £40,000 a week, which was a princely sum at the time.

Bogarde made just eleven appearances during his time at Stamford Bridge, but despite his lack of matches, he refused to leave, choosing to pick up his lucrative weekly wage until his departure in 2004.

To rub salt into the wound, the defender even called himself one of the “worst buys in the history of the Premiership.”

Adrian Mutu

The Romanian international was signed from Parma for £15.8m but during his spell at Chelsea, he was banned for seven months after testing positive for cocaine.

A lengthy legal battle, which lasted thirteen years, led to the Blues being awarded €17m in compensation for breach of contract without just cause, which Mutu himself had to pay.

Andriy Shevchenko

One of the true greats of European football over the last two decades, the Ukrainian arrived from AC Milan for £30m in 2006 with big expectations on his shoulders.

However, Shevchenko managed just 23 goals in 76 appearances for Chelsea before being shipped back on loan to Milan in 2008. He left permanently for Dynamo Kyiv in 2009.

Papy Djilobodji

The Blues paid Nantes £4m for the Senegalese defender in 2015. He played just one minute of first-team football during his time at Stamford Bridge, in a League Cup tie against Walsall.

Djilobodji left for Sunderland in 2016 and he is now playing in Turkey for Gazisehir Gaziantep.

Chris Sutton

The £10m that Chelsea paid Blackburn Rovers for the forward in 1999 was a significant amount at the time but he managed just three goals in 39 appearances during his only campaign at the club.

Sutton was sold at a loss to Celtic just a year after joining the Blues, where he became a legendary figure for the Scottish club.
