Stan Collymore: Chelsea should have signed Keita

Former Liverpool star turned pundit Stan Collymore says that Chelsea should have done more to sign Naby Keita from RB Leipzig.

Liverpool completed the signing of the midfielder after activating his £48m release clause that comes into effect next summer, meaning he will join up with Jurgen Klopp’s side at the end of the season. But Collymore says that Chelsea missed a trick with the youngster, saying he is surprised the Blues did not swoop for the 22-year-old.

Chelsea did sign a young central midfielder in Tiemoue Bakayoko, and also signed experienced Danny Drinkwater from Leicester, but Collymore doesn’t believe Antonio Conte will be entirely happy with the summer he had – with the Italian complaining on more than one occasion about the club’s slow transfer dealings.

“Eden Hazard says his Chelsea have the squad and the manager to win the Champions League — but I disagree,” Collymore wrote in his column in the Daily Mirror.

“I don’t even think they’ll go as far as Manchester United or, by a fag paper, Liverpool in this season’s competition.”

“Even though Chelsea have won their last three games in the Premier League and things seem to have settled behind the scenes, I don’t think they have added to their squad enough for Conte’s liking when it comes to the Champions League.”

“I expected them to be in for a Naby Keita, a Leonardo Bonucci — players who were up for grabs in the summer — and they didn’t get them, even though I suspect their manager wanted them.”

Chelsea’s midfield looks strong this season despite what many say, the squad depth is certainly not looking like there’s any reason for concern.
