Six Things That Need To Go Right If Chelsea Are To Secure A Sensational Swoop For Erling Haaland

Chelsea’s summer has been a rather uneventful one in the transfer market, with most of the club’s dealings being outgoings rather than incomings.

That is likely to be deliberate as the London club look to build the transfer war chest required to secure their marquee signing: a new number nine.

Reports suggest that Erling Haaland is the man that the Blues want to spearhead their attack this season, but it will be an extremely complicated deal to complete for a number of reasons.

Press the next page as we go through six things that need to go right if Chelsea are to snap up the 21-year-old.

Personal Terms Need To Be Agreed

This might sound a bit obvious but there had been talk earlier this year that Haaland was demanding around £600,000 a week to make the move to the Premier League.

Such a number may not scare off the two Manchester clubs but Chelsea do have a more sensible wage structure. Paying over the odds in terms of salary could have destabilized the dressing room with other players demanding more money if they got wind of what Haaland was earning. It means the Norwegian would have to agree to more reasonable personal terms for a deal to go through.

Mino Raiola Must Be On Board

Chelsea have clashed with the Italian-born Dutchman in the past, most notably over the aborted effort to sign Romelu Lukaku from Everton in 2017. It is believed that attempts have been made to smooth over the relationship since then, but that won’t be enough.

There are reports that Raiola will also demand a staggering £40m agent fee, and so that will need to be factored into the budget, on top of the transfer funds required to meet Borussia Dortmund’s asking price.

Dortmund Will Need to Be Flexible On Performance Related Bonuses

Reports suggest that Blues owner Roman Abramovich is only willing to go as high as £130m, which is said to be £20m short of Dortmund’s £150m valuation.

If that is true, any agreement would probably hinge on Dortmund agreeing to the additional £20m being bonuses based on performances, which are likely to be centred around winning the league and the number of goals Haaland scores.

Other Interested Clubs Must Stay Out Of The Way

The main reason why Chelsea are aiming to sign Haaland this summer is because they know he has a release clause that comes into effect next year, which will undoubtedly attract a whole host of teams to the negotiating table.

The Blues feel they have a free swing to try and sign the Norwegian now without that competition. However, if the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid or Manchester United do get involved now, it could jeopardize the whole deal.

Dortmund Must Be Made To Feel That Chelsea Are Serious

The Bundesliga side are notoriously tough negotiators. It took Manchester United the best part of a year to get Jadon Sancho, and so making a lowball bid for Haaland is not an option.

There have already been rumours that Chelsea have offered players to Dortmund to lower the overall price of the transfer but the German club are demanding straight-up cash. If the Blues want the striker, they have to put the money down on the table.

Negotiations Can’t Be Allowed To Drag On

United’s talks over Sancho last summer provide lessons about what not to do. Dortmund placed a deadline on when they wanted a deal to be done, which was the start of the Bundesliga season.

The Red Devils ignored that ultimatum and negotiations ground to a halt as a result. Chelsea must be decisive and swift in their discussions over Haaland or the deal could collapse quickly.
