Should Chelsea KEEP Or SELL? We Assess The Futures Of Kante, Jorginho, Ziyech, Mendy And Havertz

There are a number of players in Chelsea’s first-team squad who are at a crossroads in their careers at Stamford Bridge.

Some are signings who have flattered to deceive since their arrival in London while others have been unqualified successes whose contracts are set to run down.

In this post today, we will be looking at the futures of N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Hakim Ziyech, Edouard Mendy and Kai Havertz and discussing whether the Blues will end up deciding to keep or sell them.

Press the next page as we deliver verdicts on the five players.

N’Golo Kante

The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of the season but, despite the service he has given the club, the Blues are reluctant to hand him a new long-term deal.

Kante’s poor recent injury record means handing the midfielder a lengthy extension is a massive risk and the club are right not to give in to his demands. If he softens his stance over the length of the contract, a compromise could still be found.

Verdict – KEEP (if possible)

Jorginho

The Italian international is also nearing the end of his contract, and he can formally speak to foreign clubs in just over two months, with Juventus and Barcelona said to be his main suitors.

Jorginho is not an ideal fit for manager Graham Potter’s style of play. His preference for box-to-box midfielders who can cover a lot of ground means he may not see the club’s vice-captain as indispensable.

Verdict – Leaving On A Free

Hakim Ziyech

The writing is very much on the wall for the Moroccan international. Despite his undoubted natural talent, he has seemingly failed to convince Potter he is worthy of game time. He has played only 12 minutes since the new manager’s arrival last month.

Previous head coach Thomas Tuchel was also not a fan, so a departure in January or at the end of the season seems to be inevitable. Serie A champions AC Milan are still said to be keen on securing his services after failing to agree a deal last summer.

Verdict – SELL

Edouard Mendy

It has been a dramatic fall from grace for the Senegalese international, who was touted as the best keeper in the world this time last year. However, mistakes and the unexpected resurgence of Kepa Arrizabalaga have raised questions about his future at Stamford Bridge.

Mendy has also rejected a new contract after demanding pay parity with Kepa, so a parting of ways could happen. He is a talented shot-stopper, though, and there are questions about whether Kepa can sustain his form so there is a chance he could regain his place in the coming months.

Verdict – KEEP

Kai Havertz

The German international has failed to kick on as expected. Three different managers have tried to get the most out of him but his inconsistent performances make him a frustrating player to watch.

There is a feeling that Chelsea would end up regretting selling Havertz considering his undoubted potential, but patience is wearing thin with him.

Verdict – KEEP
