Rio Ferdinand Pinpoints Key Attribute Which Has Impressed Him Most About 22M Chelsea Signing

BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand has praised Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy‘s self-confidence following the Senegalese international’s excellent start to life in English football.

The 28-year-old has yet to concede in the Premier League, having made three appearances so far and, barring a couple of errors in his passing against Manchester United, Ferdinand says the keeper’s composure has impressed him hugely:

“We watched him here against Palace earlier in the season and I think it was his first game and he was very assured. He is a huge size, a great specimen, but the guy makes saves. He makes important saves at important times.”

“He made a couple of mistakes at Old Trafford [against Manchester United] with his feet but it didn’t affect him at all. He didn’t appear to drop any confidence. The guy looks as though he has come here to say ‘look, I’m here to make saves’.”

Manager Frank Lampard has described Mendy as “laid-back” and that air of calmness has certainly translated to the backline in front of him since his £22m move from Rennes.

Six clean sheets in seven appearances is extremely impressive stuff but it is still wise to be a bit cautious. The shot-stopper is undoubtedly high in confidence at the moment and it remains to be seen how he will react if and when he makes an error.

With a save percentage of 92.9% in all competitions, though, Ferdinand is right to point out his ability to make important saves for his team.
