Rating All Six Of Chelsea Summer Signings’ Starts To The Season

Chelsea made some big moves in the transfer market before the window closed last month. The Blues added six major signings to the first team squad.

Manager Frank Lampard was determined to build on last season’s fourth-place and, with the transfer ban lifted, Chelsea were once again able to flex their financial muscles.

Despite some disappointing results, it has, on the whole, been a good start to the season, with many of the club’s new additions making a good impression.

Press the next page as we rate all six of Chelsea signings’ starts to the 2021/22 campaign.

Kai Havertz (6/10)

The German international has shown glimpses of what he can do so far, and you can’t really fault his stats that show he has scored four goals and contributed three assists in 10 appearances so far this campaign.

It must be pointed out, though, that three of those goals came against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup. Havertz is only 21 years of age and he has got plenty of time to justify his club-record price tag.

Timo Werner (8/10)

The 24-year-old has undoubtedly been money well spent. His eight goals in 12 appearances is a very good start, although three of those have been penalties.

Werner has looked sharp since the start of the season, and while it did take him until his fifth start to get his first Premier League goal, he has been excellent since the last international break.

Ben Chilwell (9/10)

Many Chelsea supporters were sceptical when the Blues opted to shell out £50m on the England international but he has shown in his brief period at the club that he could be a very shrewd piece of business.

Chilwell is capable both defensively and in the attacking third of the pitch, contributing two goals and three assists so far. He offers what Marcos Alonso can provide going forward without any of the major drawbacks.

Hakim Ziyech (9/10)

The Moroccan’s knee injury at the start of the season meant it took a while for the winger to establish himself in the first team set up but he has been making up for lost time.

Ziyech is just one of those players who can make something happen on the ball, and in just four starts, he has already racked up two goals and three assists.

Edouard Mendy (9/10)

Not much was known about the Senegalese international before his £22m switch to Stamford Bridge. Even Lampard was placing his trust in Petr Cech and Christophe Lollichon who believed he was the answer to the club’s goalkeeping problems.

So far, it has proven to be an inspired signing. Mendy is authoritative in the box and has the agility to pull off very good saves. He has kept six clean sheets in eight games for Chelsea.

Thiago Silva (8/10)

There were some doubts over whether signing a 35-year-old defender would be a wise decision but the Brazilian veteran has already proven that he is more than up the task of playing in the Premier League. His mistake on his debut against West Brom aside, he has been superb.

Silva is the leader at the back that Lampard has been looking for since he arrived at the club. The centre-back simply makes players around play better whilst offering an assured presence at the back.
