Paul Merson Predicts The Outcome As Chelsea Face Newcastle

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson is expecting a stalemate when Chelsea take on Newcastle at St James’ Park this evening.

The Blues put in a poor performance against Arsenal in the league last weekend and, combined with the Magpies’ excellent recent form, Merson says he can’t see Graham Potter’s side coming away from the match with three points:

“I can’t remember the last time Chelsea lost three league games on the trot, and it could happen this weekend. I do like Graham Potter, and I hope he gets it right. Newcastle are absolutely flying at the moment.”

“If they win this game, they will fancy their chances in the top-four race. The name of the game is to beat lesser teams and avoid defeat against the big clubs. Newcastle have got to be careful and they need to make sure they don’t get caught up in the occasion. I think this game will end in a draw – I don’t see Chelsea winning, and that’s a big compliment to Newcastle.”

Merson has gone with a 1-1 scoreline, which seems like a fair prediction considering what we know about the two teams going into tonight’s game.

Newcastle have still not lost at home this season and this will be a very tough test for Potter’s men, especially as they haven’t really looked that great recently, having suffered three defeats in their last four fixtures in all competitions.

For that reason, some Chelsea supporters would probably take a point now, although they would certainly much prefer heading into the World Cup on a high by securing victory.
