Mourinho Was Not Abramovich’s First Choice

Mourinho Was Not Abramovich’s First Choice

Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge was seen as one of the biggest moments of the summer. The Portuguese manager had already spoken about how the Premier League is the place to be and how well English football suits him. Even though all signs pointed towards Chelsea, some recent news revealed the fact that he was actually thinking of taking over Manchester United. Both Mourinho and Chelsea’s owner said they have left all their differences behind a long time ago and that “The Special One’s” return was just a matter of time. Apparently, The Blues’ owner, Roman Abramovich had had someone else in mind before turning to Mou.

According to Metro, Michael Laudrup was the first choice for Chelsea during the summer. He was approached just before Mourinho became the Blues’ new manager.

Laudrup has been with Swansea since 2012 and has already managed to win the Capital One Cup which was one of the most unexpected moments of English football. Even though he has yet to manage any big clubs, the former Danish international made quite a good impression during his first season as a manager in the Premier League.

According to Laudrup, nothing certain came his way. He also said that it would not have mattered anyway because he gave his word he would continue with Swansea after winning the club’s 1st major trophy since they started in English football.

One other reason for which the former Danish international stayed with Swansea was the opportunity of facing the Europa League challenge.

Even if Abramovich insisted he has buried the hatchet when it comes to his past conflicts with the Portuguese boss, things still look a bit tense. The club is no nearly as well aligned as it was during Mou’s first mandate and that shows on the pitch. The Blues have had some fluctuating performances that were unexpected after “The Special One” took Benitez’s place.
