Mourinho Confirms Position On Mata And Luiz

There were some reports suggesting that Mata, Chelsea’s Player of the Year for the past two seasons, is surplus to requirements under new Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. To add to the bemusement among Chelsea fans, even the impressive David Luiz has been linked with a move away from the club.

In another one of the more staggering stories of the summer, the Blues are in the hunt to sign wantaway Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and have reportedly submitted a £10 million bid plus either of the aforementioned pair for the England international – which were immediately denied by the club.

While the interest in Rooney is real, and the club have indeed a lodged a bid for the unsettled striker, Chelsea have confirmed that neither Mata nor Luiz were offered in exchange. With so much negativity surrounding the pair, Chelsea deemed it fit to officially confirm both players will remain at the club next season.

According to ESPN, Mourinho wants the public to know about his admiration for the players by insisting that there is ‘no chance’ of the pair being sold this summer. The report says that Mourinho has ruled out any possible sales of the duo as they remain in his plans for the upcoming season.

Chelsea are currently in Asia for their pre-season tour but are without the Spaniard and the Brazilian due to extra holidays being granted to the pair on account of their Confederations Cup exploits. While Mourinho has not deemed it necessary to contact them to reassure their future, he did confirm he spoke to them during the Confederations Cup.

He said, “I spoke with them during the summer, in my period of holiday and their period of the Confederations Cup, yes. But when they finished the Confederations Cup I just wished them luck and told them that I will see them on the 28th.”

“I am not going to contact them based on news that are not true, and that they know that is not true because I have told them they are very important for me. How can I change that two days later because of a news [story]? So no, no contact with them! “

He was also probed on either player being sold this summer and he replied, “No chance, no chance.” So, Mourinho does look at them as being an integral part of his squad and rightly so, since both players had an outstanding 2012-13 season. If Chelsea indeed want to challenge for the title next season, they would need both players fit and raring to go once the season gets underway.
