Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are both “studying a strategy” to buy Victor Osimhen for a fee below his release clause, according to the Gazzetta Dello Sport.

The Nigerian international’s clause is said to be between €120m (£103m) and €130m (£111m) which is a sizeable sum for either team to pay.

It is believed that the two clubs have decided to explore whether Napoli would be open to a part-exchange offer with a player moving to the Serie A champions as part of the deal.

However, there is no certainty that such a proposal would be accepted. Napoli have had a bad season and will be looking to rebuild their squad this summer so money up front would be more attractive.

In addition to replacing Osimhen, Gazzetta claim the Partenopei are hoping to recruit a centre-back and a “top midfielder.”

How has Osimhen been performing this season?

The 24-year-old got his 14th goal of the campaign during the 4-2 win over Monza at the weekend. The striker has had to contend with a hamstring injury and a call-up for the African Cup of Nations so he hasn’t been quite as prolific for his club as last year.

Even so, with the buyout clause included in the new contract he signed back in December, it is looking likely that there will be a scramble for Osimhen’s signature this summer.

Are Chelsea considering alternatives?

RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Brighton’s Evan Ferguson are also known to be on the London club’s radar. However, a potential move for Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres has been played down.

From the sound of things, Osimhen would be the top target if the Blues can get around Financial Fair Play restrictions. A player-plus-cash deal does seem like a logical solution but a lot depends on Napoli’s attitude towards such a bid.
