Most Expensive Transfers In The January Transfer Window In The Premier League

The January Transfer Window has now finally slammed shut, following a hectic month of incomings and outgoings. But which were the most expensive deals conducted in the window? Here we examine the most expensive transfers in the January transfer window in the Premier League.

For this list, we’re only looking at permanent transfers – no loan deals. Therefore, players such as Joao Felix won’t be included, despite the finances behind the deal. Additionally, if a transfer is made via instalments or with add ons, then we’ll only be taking the total amount into account.

Three of the transfers on this list are players who Chelsea purchased in the January window. Can you guess who they are?

Benoit Badiashile

First up is Benoit Badiashile, who Chelsea snapped up from Monaco for a reported fee of £35 million. A dependable, technically sound centre back who can play on either side, Badiashile is the ideal defender for the modern game.

Badiashile has been capped by his native France, but missed out on the final squad for the 2022 World Cup. However, aged just 21, there will be plenty of future opportunities for him.

While at Monaco, Badiashile scored two goals across 11 Ligue 1 appearances this season.

Georginio Rutter

A surprising inclusion on this list – Leeds United were not frightened to splash the cash in their quest to secure Georginio Rutter’s signature. The West Yorkshire club paid £36 million to tie him down, making him one of their most expensive transfers of all time.

At 20 years old, Rutter has a very exciting future in football. He has represented France at various youth levels, scoring 21 goals for Le Bleus in total.

He has yet to make his Premier League debut – while at Hoffenheim, Rutter scored two goals and notched up two assists in 15 games.

Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon has been linked with a move away from Everton for over half a year now – on January 29, a deal was finally completed as he moved to Newcastle United for a reported £40 million.

A skilful winger with bags of pace and a eye for goal, it’s not too difficult to see why he was so coveted. In the summer, Chelsea were linked with the 21-year-old and were reportedly willing to pay £60 million to sign him.

While at Everton, Gordon scored seven goals across 65 appearances in the Premier League.

Mykhailo Mudryk

Another big money signing from Chelsea, Mykhailo Mudryk was snapped up by Chelsea for a reported £89 million in total, when taking add ons into account.

The 22-year-old Ukrainian starlet made his debut for the club against Liverpool, coming on as a second half substitute. He didn’t score, but nevertheless impressed audiences with his wonderful dribbling ability and pace.

Initially, Mudryk looked set for a move to Arsenal, but Chelsea swooped in at the death to secure his signature.

Enzo Fernandez

The transfer saga of Enzo Fernandez seemed never ending. Following months upon months of talks, Chelsea finally got their man on Deadline Day for a total fee of £106.8 million, setting a new British transfer record in the process.

Chelsea weren’t the only club interested in him. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool were also thought to be in the race, but they instead opted to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV early in the wondow.

An adept midfielder who can also function effectively on the wings, could Fernandez be the lynchpin to kickstart Chelsea’s underwhelming season so far and be the man they build their team around?
