Morata will grab the headlines but Chelsea also need Batshuayi

Chelsea endured a fairly slow start to the summer transfer window but have secured major additions to bolster their squad, bringing in Willy Caballero, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Antonio Rudiger and Alvaro Morata to strengthen the squad ahead of their title defence.

The addition of Morata is certainly the one that will get Chelsea fans and the media talking the most as the capture of the Spanish striker is a major change of direction from Antonio Conte, who’s ready to oust Diego Costa from his side in what’s certainly a brave decision.

Conte has proven himself to be a top-class coach though by crafting the likes of Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses into Premier League players of the highest standard and he’ll now be looking to make an impact on the future of Chelsea’s side.

Morata, 24, arrives in the Premier League with a strong reputation following successful spells with Real Madrid and Juventus. However, as the numbers show, the Spaniard isn’t the same sort of striker as the one he is replacing and this, added to the fact he’ll have to settle into a new league, may be a concern.

Conte therefore needs to ensure he slots Morata into his system perfectly and also needs to ensure the Spanish forward doesn’t carry all of the pressure, meaning the Italian boss needs to work his magic on Michy Batshuayi- a player who struggled last season.

Since arriving from Marseille last summer, Batshuayi struggled to make an impact in the Premier League and failed to secure regular opportunities- although he did enjoy an upturn in form towards the end of the campaign, scoring the title-winning goal against West Brom for the Premier League champions.

The 23-year-old has continued on that trajectory during pre-season, scoring in the victory over Arsenal and the defeat to Bayern Munich in China, and has shown that he is a capable option for Conte next season- which is crucial ahead of the Blues’ return to the Champions League.

Chelsea will need to utilise the depth of their squad if they are to enjoy success across a number of competitions and this means Batshuayi should see an increase in playing time, which should work out ideally for all parties.

Whilst it will of course benefit both Chelsea and Batshuayi, it could also be significant in helping Alvaro Morata settle into his new surroundings and should ease the pressure upon his shoulders.
