Joe Cole is expecting that Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku will end up as the top scorer in the Champions League this season.
The Belgian got off the mark in the tournament by slotting away the winner against Zenit St Petersburg during the first group match last night, and Cole believes it will be the first of many:
“I’m going to throw this out there, I think he’ll be top scorer in the Champions League this season. Lukaku didn’t even have one of his better games, he was a little bit scruffy but he’s a finisher now, a killer. Once that ball was delivered there was only going to be one winner, he’s a great finisher.”
If Lukaku does score a fair few in Europe this campaign, it would also mean that the Blues would have gone a fair distance in the competition.
Of course, with the likes of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo also scoring for their clubs yesterday evening, it won’t be easy to finish as the leading scorer.
However, Lukaku is an excellent finisher, as Cole rightly points out, and he is likely to be a deciding factor in a lot of close games. Supporters will be hoping he can help Thomas Tuchel’s side retain their European crown.
