Is Torres In The Position To Choose His Future?

Fernando Torres, the Spanish international arrived on English shores back in 2007, when Rafael Benitez then managing Liverpool broke the bank to sign the highly-rated young striker from La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid for an estimated transfer fee of £23 million.

The Reds proved it to be a very smart acquisition as ‘El Nino’ confirmed the great investment with a sea of goals for Liverpool and a soaring transfer valuation. He soon became one of Europe’s best and most feared strikers.

Then came the January of 2011 with Torres in mediocre form and trying to shake off a sequence of injuries. On January transfer deadline day Chelsea came knocking on the door of Liverpool with an audacious bid of £50 million for their hitman. Liverpool accepted the bid making Torres the most expensive player in England.

With a massive price tag came massive expectations but these proved to be too big of a burden for Torres. He has struggled to fit in at Chelsea ever since he arrived at Stamford Bridge and has never got close to his early Liverpool form. With few goals and completely out of form, Torres has shockingly become dead wood at Chelsea, with the London side struggling to get value for their money.

Torres really has not yet recovered, having last found the back of the net back in December last year. He has also been relegated to the bench of late, and has been replaced by Demba Ba as first choice striker on several occasions.

There were reports that Chelsea were willing to accept heavy losses and offload their non-performing asset for a paltry £15 million. Since then, he has been linked to Russian side Anzhi Makachkala who are now interested in bringing Torres to Russia in the summer. The 28-year old has rejected their advances so far, and would possibly be more interested in a move back to Spain or Italy.

Now the question is, keeping his current form in mind, do you believe that Torres is in a position to choose his preferred destination, should a number of clubs come looking for him this summer, or should he look at a move to Russia as a chance to resurrect his career?
