Four Stats About Edouard Mendy’s Start To The Season That Should Excite Chelsea Fans

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has praised goalkeeper Edouard Mendy for the start he has made in a Blues shirt since his arrival from Rennes back in September.

The 28-year-old has kept five clean sheets in his first six appearances following his £22m move to Stamford Bridge, and Lampard says the shot-stopper has given his team some much-needed reliability in goal:

“Edouard has come in and from the first game he played, against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, and the game’s he’s played he’s shown his own security and that’s what we’re striving for. We brought him in for competition and it’s up to the players then to show their own qualities and he’s shown them.”

Mendy has certainly had a very good start to his Chelsea career. Press the next page as we go through four statistics that show how well he has performed since arriving at the club.

Save Percentage

Mendy currently has an extremely impressive save percentage of 91.7% in all competitions. As he has only played six games for Chelsea, that will almost certainly drop over the course of the season but if you compare it to Kepa Arrizabalaga, there is a huge difference.

The Spaniard only managed to save 57.1% of the shots he faced in his first three Premier League appearances this campaign. That was still better than the 54.5% he managed in the league last season.

Expected Goals Against

Mendy has only conceded one goal in six appearances for the Blues, and if we look at his expected goals (xG) against during that time, he is already overperforming. He has an expected xG against of 1.5 so far.

It means the Senegalese international is 0.5 ahead. If we extrapolate that over the course of the season, he could save the team up to three goals more than the average keeper over a 38 game campaign. We shall see how his form changes over the coming months.

Coming Off His Line

Mendy has already come out of his penalty area to sweep up on four occasions. That is an average of 0.8 times per 90 minutes. In contrast, Kepa only played the sweeper on 21 occasions in 33 league games, averaging 0.6 times per 90.

It shows that that the club’s new number one is already being more proactive off his line than his predecessor. Again, we shall have to wait and see how this plays out over more games.

Passing

Mendy has yet to have a pass intercepted or blocked so far this campaign. Kepa, on the other hand, has already had one intercepted that led to Sadio Mane’s goal in the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool.

In fact, over the past two seasons, Mendy has had just two intercepted passes and one blocked, with Kepa having had 12 passes intercepted and two blocked in the same period of time.
