Five Things Fans Need To Know About Chelsea Manager Thomas Tuchel & His Footballing Philosophy

Chelsea are expected to appoint former Borussia Dortmund and PSG head coach Thomas Tuchel as the successor to Frank Lampard.

The 47-year-old, who was recently sacked by Paris Saint-Germain, is likely to fly to London today before being officially announced as the club’s new manager.

Tuchel’s appointment is an interesting one, but not entirely surprising considering the German’s background and the knowledge he brings to the job.

So what do we know about the German? Press the next page as we delve deeper into the manager’s personality and philosophy.

1. Tuchel challenges and improves his players

One of the reported complaints made by Chelsea players about Frank Lampard is he didn’t really give them enough information on a tactical level.

Tuchel is the polar opposite in that regard. He is known for going into the granular detail: looking at player’s diets, fitness regimes, sleeping patterns, as well as identifying ways players can improve their games. For the Blues’ young squad, this could be very beneficial.

2. He loves to be in control

Tuchel has been known for getting involved in aspects of the club that don’t fall under his purview.  He was unhappy with Borussia Dortmund’s scouting department and wanted an overhaul, leading to friction with head scout Sven Mislintat.

The 47-year-old’s desire for control has got him into trouble at his last two clubs. Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc and CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke have been critical of Tuchel following his departure from the Bundesliga side three and a half years ago. The manager’s falling out with PSG director Leonardo also led to his sacking last month. It remains to be seen how he copes with the notorious Marina Granovskaia.

3. Tuchel already has fans in Chelsea’s squad

As we mentioned in another article today, Tuchel already has some supporters in Chelsea’s first-team, with the 47-year-old having managed Thiago Silva until very recently.

The German also played an instrumental role at the start of Christian Pulisic’s career so expect both of those players to feature prominently in his team selections.

4. He is confident in his own abilities

Reports suggest that Chelsea have tasked Tuchel with winning the Premier League this season, despite the Blues being 11 points behind Manchester United at the top of the table. With the German happy to sign an 18-month contract, it seems he is confident of making an instant impact.

It has been reported that he also turned down the job at Bayern Munich in the past as he didn’t like how long it took for them to offer him the role.

5. Tuchel is inspired by Bielsa and his brand of attacking football

Known by many in Germany as “the Professor,” Tuchel is said to have been particularly inspired by Marcelo Bielsa’s tactical approach, specifically his time in charge of Chile’s national team.

Tuchel is known for employing many different tactical systems, much like the Argentine, and Chelsea fans should expect an attacking philosophy in a similar vein, albeit one which is slightly more conservative.
