Community Shield defeat shows Conte needs to strengthen his squad

The Community Shield may not be top of Chelsea’s priorities this summer but their defeat to Arsenal at Wembley yesterday certainly raised eyebrows, particularly in the fashion of the result that saw the Blues throw away an advantage.

Chelsea experienced a slow start to the game but grew into the match as the first-half progressed, before taking the lead minutes into the second-half as Victor Moses took advantage of some poor Arsenal defending.

Despite the Gunners having a wealth of stars missing from their squad and featuring a defensive line-up that was certainly experimental, Chelsea failed to build upon their advantage and saw the match slip away from them in a matter of moments.

Pedro Rodriguez’ clumsy tackle on Mohamed Elneny saw the Spaniard earn a straight red-card and Arsenal found their equaliser from the resulting free-kick, as Granit Xhaka’s inviting ball into the middle found an unmarked Sead Kolasinac.

In truth, the overall performance for Chelsea wasn’t bad but their concern will be the lack of difference makers they had on the bench, with their only notable attacking player capable of being brought on standing as Alvaro Morata.

The Spanish striker will be crucial for Chelsea this season but needs time to settle into the squad and Michy Batshuayi’s performance raised questions, as it seems the Belgian doesn’t quite match up to the Blues tactics.

In midfield Chelsea didn’t have any alternatives to Cesc Fabregas and N’Golo Kante, with Tiemoue Bakayoko nursing a knee injury, and a lack of options in the final third meant that the Blues couldn’t take control of the match in the fashion they would have liked.

Conte’s side made their point in the penalty shoot-out with a bizarre set-up, with Gary Cahill stepping up first, confidently dispatching his spot-kick, before Thibaut Courtois blazed an effort over the bar and Morata struck his effort wide of the mark.

The Italian is desperate to add further additions to his squad this summer and time is running out for the Blues as there is just weeks away from the transfer window slamming shut, whilst clubs will be looking to take advantage of the Blues’ desperation.
