Ben Jacobs Confirms Chelsea Target Is “Open” To £20M Transfer As Club Enter Negotiations

Leeds midfielder Tyler Adams is “open” to joining Chelsea, with the Blues now likely to “proceed” with an opening bid for the American international, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

While the player does have a £20m release clause in his contract, which became active when Leeds were relegated to the Championship, Jacobs says that Chelsea may look to structure the deal in a “different” way:

Financial Fairplay rules are likely the reason why Chelsea are not willing to pay the £20m required upfront. It may mean, though, that negotiations take longer, with Leeds expected to demand more than the buyout fee if the Blues opt against triggering the clause.

Even so, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. It was a similar situation with Nicolas Jackson’s €35m (£30m) release clause, and the club ultimately ended up paying around €37m (£32m) instead.

Adams has been linked with Premier League rivals

Mauricio Pochettino’s side may not want to be locked in talks with Leeds for too long, though, as there are known to be, at least, two other Premier League clubs interested in snapping up Adams.

Nottingham Forest were mentioned as a potential suitor earlier in the summer, but Aston Villa are said to be the Blues’ main rivals for the 24-year-old.

Chelsea’s move for Adams is separate to the Caicedo deal

It was originally suggested that Adams would be considered as an alternative to Brighton’s Moises Caicedo but Jacobs and Fabrizio Romano have now emphasised that the Blues want both players.

Caicedo reportedly missed training on Monday in order to force through a move to Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea are expected to make a fourth bid for the Ecuadorian international very soon.
