Chelsea are “considering” a move for Leeds midfielder Tyler Adams as they ponder potential alternatives to Brighton’s Moises Caicedo, according to The Athletic.

It was reported earlier this week that the Blues had added the USA captain to the club’s shortlist of transfer targets but it now appears that he is the main backup option if the Caicedo deal collapses.

Adams will be a lot cheaper than the Ecuadorian international as he has a £20m release clause, which became active when Leeds were relegated to the Championship.

Although some fans may be surprised that the American is under serious consideration, his defensive stats do compare favourably with the likes of Caicedo and another target Romeo Lavia.

Adams averaged more tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes (5.17) than either Caicedo (4.47) or Lavia (3.77) in the Premier League last season. On top of that, his possession game is not poor either, having averaged 5.67 progressive passes per 90.

There could be rivals for Adams’ signature

Aston Villa are said to be very interested in recruiting the 24-year-old as well, with manager Unai Emery aiming to add another midfielder before the transfer window closes.

The fact that Adams is available for just £20m does mean that Chelsea could have to see off other potential suitors too.

Caicedo remains Chelsea’s priority target

Any move for Adams does, however, depend on what happens in negotiations between the Blues and Brighton for Caicedo.

A number of bids have been rejected for the Ecuadorian, with the Seagulls still holding out for their £100m. At the moment, Chelsea are not prepared to meet the asking price and, if things don’t change soon, the club may need to move on.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has spoken out about the need to add depth in the middle of the park and the recruitment team won’t want to leave him short of options in a crucial area of the pitch.
