TalkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy claims Chelsea will regret not including a buyback option on Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

The Blues sold the England international for £18m just over 2 years ago and, while Murphy understands why the defender was offloaded, he says it was a poor decision not to insist on a clause that would allow them to re-sign the player for a “reasonable” price:

“I think it’s always difficult when players are on a certain journey that doesn’t align with the club And what I mean by that is he wanted to play every week, he was probably at Chelsea at a time where players ahead of him were rightly ahead of him.”

“And although you might see this potential and this emerging talent for a year or two years down the line, if he’s completely unsettled and there’s a value to get him gone and take the money for him and let him go, you [do that]. I mean, they should’ve put a buy-back clause in of a reasonable amount maybe.”

Guehi is now worth 3 times what Chelsea sold him for

There were actually rumours during the summer transfer window that Chelsea were looking to re-sign the 23-year-old. Both the Blues and Arsenal were mentioned as potential suitors.

However, it was reported that Palace had slapped a £60m asking price on Guehi, significantly more than the fee they paid to sign him in the first place.

Chelsea don’t exactly need more centre-backs

While there is no disputing the fact that Guehi is a very talented player, the Blues are already well-stocked in the centre of defence.

Along with Thiago Silva and Levi Colwill, the club have bought the likes of Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi over the past year, while Trevoh Chalobah is also still in the squad:
