Lille striker Jonathan David has responded to speculation that Chelsea are interested in signing him.

French TV station Telefoot had linked the Canadian international with a move to Stamford Bridge and, when asked about the reports, David replied:

“When you’re young, these are the clubs you watch and think about. It’s flattering, I appreciate that.”

David has been on the Blues’ radar for quite some time. He has been in decent form this season, having scored 11 goals in all competitions.

However, it must be said that the 24-year-old has been less impressive than he was last campaign when he hit the back net 24 times in the league alone.

Lille have slapped a high asking price on David

Despite the fact that the Canadian has less than 18 months left on his contract, his club are reportedly demanding around €60m (£51m) for the forward.

If Chelsea do retain an interest in David, it may be wise to wait until the summer when he may become available for a more affordable price. Of course, that is easier said than done, with the Blues needing to reinforce their options up front for the second half of the season.

Nicolas Jackson is currently away at the African Cup of Nations while Armando Broja could well be sold or loaned out before the transfer deadline.

The likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United have also been mentioned as potential suitors for David, in addition to Chelsea. The amount of interest from other teams may be one of the reasons why Lille feel they can hold out for such a high fee.

With that being the case, Mauricio Pochettino’s side may look to bring in an alternative on a short-term basis this month before going all out to sign a striker like Victor Osimhen next summer.
