“I Would Be Trying To Get Him” – Pundit Calls On Chelsea To Hijack Arsenal’s Move For £40M Rated Player

TalkSPORT pundit Darren Bent believes Chelsea should be trying to sign Brentford goalkeeper David Raya.

London rivals Arsenal have reportedly agreed personal terms with the Spaniard, and formal talks with Brentford over a transfer are expected to take place in the coming days. However, Bent can’t understand why the keeper would accept a move to the Emirates when he could be a guaranteed starter at Stamford Bridge:

“David Raya is better than Kepa Arrizabalaga. So why would Chelsea not go for him? And why would David Raya not think, ‘Hold on, why am I going to Arsenal to play behind Aaron Ramsdale? Why don’t I go to Chelsea and be their number one?’ There’s something not quite right with Arsenal’s deal for David Raya. If I was Chelsea, I would be trying to get him.”

You can’t really fault Bent’s logic really. Raya may be somewhat expensive, with Brentford still demanding £40m despite the shot-stopper having less than a year left on his contract, but that asking price could be lowered before the transfer window closes, as the Bees won’t want him to leave for nothing next summer.

Raya would be a better option than Chelsea’s top goalkeeper target

It is believed that Chelsea are in the market for a goalkeeper, and they have begun talks with Brighton about signing Robert Sanchez.

You don’t need to delve too far into the statistics, though, to see that Raya would be the better choice out of the two. The Brentford keeper’s save percentage in the Premier League last season was 77.7%, while Sanchez’s was only 64.8%.

Pochettino may be a factor in this

Manager Mauricio Pochettino seems to be a fan of Kepa and that may be why he is simply looking for competition rather than seeking a direct replacement for Chelsea’s current no.1.

However, when there is a clear upgrade available such as Raya, you would have thought that the club would make a concerted effort to sign him.
