Chelsea Should Be Happy To Part With David Luiz

Chelsea defender David Luiz is rumoured to be on the move away from Stamford Bridge with FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich believed to be interested in the Brazilian.

New Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has made it clear that he’s not interesting in selling the 26-year-old star. Stating in Asia over the weekend, “The potential is incredible, amazing,” Mourinho said. “He always has to play. For me he is a central defender.”

Even with those statements, the Blues’ top management should consider the sale of Luiz simply for what they could get in return. New Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has continued to express his deepest interest in bringing David Luiz to the German club. Pep claims to have been a long admirer of the defender’s talent and claims the Champions League winners need to improve greatly in defence. Especially given the result on Saturday where in a rematch with Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup, the club conceded four goals and lost 4-2.

A transfer for Luiz would not be cheap to say the least. Having signed a five-year contract last September, a transfer could cost Bayern up to £40 million, which could ultimately force the club not make a move.

Barcelona have continued to express interest in Luiz as well. If plans for their number one target Thiago Silva fall through then the club plans to go all in on trying to land Luiz. Interestingly enough, Paris Saint-Germaine would be willing to sell Silva to Barca with the goal to land his fellow Brazilian defender in return. However, Barcelona are still set to pitch a large bid for Luiz.

With the future clearly uncertain for Luiz at Stamford Bridge, it would be the best move to part ways and pick up a large transfer fee. Although it may be difficult, the Blues could use the transfer fee from Luiz to help build their attack heading into the Premier League season. The future of Luiz is one of the issues Mourinho will have to address when he meets his entire squad for the first time since he left the club in 2007.

Luiz is one of six Blues players who played in the Confederations Cup and were excused from the tour of Asia. After a brief holiday, they have reported to the Cobham training ground before leaving on the next leg of pre-season play in the USA.
