REPORT: Chelsea Set To Seal Transfer Deal For Premier League Goalkeeper

Chelsea will soon announce the signing of Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

An official statement from Chelsea will soon be posted to confirm the transfer – according to Romano, Sanchez has been purchased for a price of £20 million plus £5 million in add-ons. His medical at the club has been completed – all is left is for Chelsea to make the deal official.

This is not the first transfer signing that Chelsea could finalise today – earlier in the day, they completed the deal to bring Axel Disasi to the club for £38.57 million.

In Romano’s tweet, he wrote: “Robert Sanchez has completed medical tests as new Chelsea player. Contract set to be signed after deal in place with Brighton, official statement to follow. Brighton to receive £20m fee plus £5m add-ons.”

Will Robert Sanchez be an upgrade over Edouard Mendy?

Last season, Robert Sanchez was one of the stronger goalkeepers in the Premier League. His relationship with Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi was publicly shaky, which led to him being dropped in favour of Luke Steele for a number of matches.

However, this is not an indication of his quality – when he was deployed between the sticks, he could always be relied upon to do a professional job. Not only is he a great shot-stopper, he also commands his area with authority.

The same cannot be said for Edouard Mendy. The Senegalese ‘keeper looked like a breath of fresh air when he arrived at Stamford Bridge, but injuries and lapses of poor form scuppered his Blues stint.

He grew more and more unreliable as his time at Chelsea drew on. A transfer away was perhaps the best move for all parties involved.

Will Robert Sanchez or Kepa Arrizabalaga be the first-choice goalkeeper for Chelsea next season?

It can be expected that Sanchez will be used as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper next season. Arrizabalaga enjoyed a run in the first team last season, but only because Mendy was out injured.

Ultimately, Kepa is simply too error-prone to be a first-choice ‘keeper for a club of Chelsea’s calibre – he has costed the Blues no end of points during his time at Stamford Bridge.
