REPORT: Chelsea Transfer Target Set To Undergo Medical At Club

A deal for Monaco’s Axel Disasi is thought to be ‘almost sealed’ for Chelsea, according to a report from journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

Disasi is currently undergoing a medical at Chelsea – once this formality is out of the way, he will be free to sign for the Blues. The fee for Disasi will amount to around £39 million and he will sign a five-year deal at Chelsea upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

In Romano’s tweet, he wrote: “Axel Disasi, in England today in order to undergo medical and sign five year deal as new Chelsea player on €45m deal from Monaco. Told Chelsea and Monaco already exchanged docs and contracts, deal is almost sealed.”

What will Axel Disasi add to the Chelsea team?

Axel Disasi will bring technical ability and fluidity to Chelsea’s backline. He is excellent at bringing the ball out of defence and linking the play to the midfield.

At 6ft 3, he is also an imposing figure – when looking for the perfect centre-back in the modern game, you need look no further than the 25-year-old.

He also has international experience under his belt. So far, Disasi has received four caps for his native France, after opting to represent Les Bleus over Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Is the squad bloated with centre-backs?

After the disappointment of Kalidou Koulibaly during the 2022/23 season, Chelsea are looking to learn from their mistakes and sign more suitable defenders for their style of play.

This has led Chelsea to giving one of their most promising youth prospects – Levi Colwill – a six-year contract with the Blues, as they looked to ward off any potential suitors for the academy graduate.

As such, there is now the worry that Chelsea may have too many centre-backs on their hands. Not including Disasi, they already have Benoit Badishile, Trevoh Chalobah, Malang Sarr, Wesley Fofana and Thiago Silva signed to the club.

Unless Pochettino plans to play a three-back system next season, this could lead to some players being frozen out or used sparingly. However, given Disasi’s price tag, it will be difficult to justify leaving him on the bench.
