Chelsea Player Ratings V Newcastle: Two Players Get 8/10 While Two Others Get 4

Chelsea eventually triumphed over Newcastle in their Carabao Cup quarter-final on Tuesday evening.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side huffed and puffed for most of the 90 minutes, but a mistake from Kieran Trippier allowed Mykhailo Mudryk to pounce and score a deserved equaliser.

The Blues took some outstanding penalties in the shootout, and they now have an excellent chance of reaching the first cup final of the season.

Goalkeeper and Defence

GK – Djordje Petrovic – 7/10 – didn’t have much to do in normal time, but he did look nervy when kicking out from the back. Saved the final spot-kick to win the shootout.

RB – Axel Disasi – 6/10 – he was solid and dependable defensively, but he doesn’t offer a great deal in the final third of the pitch, unlike Malo Gusto who provided more of a threat when switched to the right flank.

CB – Thiago Silva – 6/10 – failed to deal with Callum Wilson’s run before the opening goal, but he did put in some strong tackles and interceptions to restrict Newcastle to few other chances.

CB – Benoit Badiashile – 4/10 – was culpable for Newcastle’s goal. He couldn’t sort out his feet and Wilson punished him. It was revealed after the game that Badiashile had been suffering from illness so that may explain his below-par performance.

LB – Levi Colwill – 4/10 – the 20-year-old gave away the ball before Newcastle opened the scoring. Hooked at halftime with Pochettino explaining after the match that the defender was suffering from fatigue.

Midfield

CM – Moises Caicedo – 5/10 – it was lucky there was no VAR as the midfielder could have been sent off after just 2 minutes following a clumsy challenge on Anthony Gordon. He did not impose himself on the game even after his reprieve.

CM – Enzo Fernandez – 5/10 – had to be substituted midway through the first half. It was confirmed after the game that he was ill.

AM – Conor Gallagher – 6/10 – lots of endeavour as always from the 23-year-old, and he was unlucky not to score when he hit the bar. His place could be under threat now that Nkunku is fit.

Forwards

RW – Cole Palmer – 5/10 – not one of his best displays. The 21-year-old was pretty anonymous in the first 45 minutes and, while he was more involved after the interval, his passing was not as accurate as usual.

CF – Nicolas Jackson – 5/10 – played out of position on the left wing for most of the match after Armando Broja replaced Fernandez. Jackson did a nice swivel and turn on the ball in the box for his best chance in the second half but the shot drifted wide of the goal.

LW – Raheem Sterling – 6/10 – it’s very difficult to rate the winger. He is a constant threat when in possession but his decision-making and execution can let him down. There was a notable example in the second half when he overhit a pass to Nkunku in a 3 on 2 situation.

Substitutes

Armando Broja – 6/10 – looked a threat straight after coming on, and he scored a goal that was chalked off for offside. Didn’t offer a great deal after halftime though.

Malo Gusto – 8/10 – replaced Colwill at half-time and he was certainly keen to get forward at every opportunity. Put some probing crosses in from both flanks, and his delivery forced the error from Trippier before Chelsea’s equaliser.

Christopher Nkunku – 6/10 – you can already see what the Frenchman will bring to the table. He took up spaces in between the lines, offering himself as a passing option to his teammates. Put away his penalty in the shootout expertly.

Mykhailo Mudryk – 8/10 – the Ukrainian was alert enough to pounce on Trippier’s mistake and composed enough to slot the ball past Martin Dubravka to make it 1-1.

Ian Maatsen – N/A – wasn’t on long enough to make an impact.
