Chelsea Move Into 2nd Place

Chelsea Move Into 2nd Place

Chelsea are currently 4 points behind leaders, Arsenal who have yet to face the Blues, City or Everton who are in the top five. Hopefully for Mourinho’s team, they will make their way to first place by January.

The game against Southampton started in the most unpleasant way possible for the Blues. With only 13 seconds gone, Essien who started for the first time in the Premier League since returning from Madrid, sent a ball right to Jay Rodriguez who found himself in front of goal. The England international opened the scoring in a record time.

Chelsea looked down and players like Oscar did not seem to matter on the pitch. The Blues got their first shot 20 minutes into the game. The Brazilian found the target but sent the ball right to Boruc.

Just three minutes after that Hazard and Oscar exchanged a few passes which led to an assist that reached Torres. The Spaniard failed to make the most out of that chance and the score remained leveled.

Jay Rodriguez looked to be the biggest threat for Chelsea who still could not find their pace. Oscar, who is Chelsea’s top goal scorer continued to threaten Southampton’s goal but got injured along the way. Lampard had to come in and replace the young midfielder who did not look fit to continue.

Luckily for the Blues, Oscar’s substitution allowed Mata to perform in his favorite position which really improved the game. The Spaniard found Torres with only 2 minutes to go out of the first half, but the striker failed to score once again.

The second half started pretty well for Chelsea. Mourinho sent in Demba Ba to replace Essien which proved an excellent move. With only 10 minutes gone Cahill took advantage of some poor defending and scored the equalizer. Seven minutes later Terry received a ball from Mata and managed a great header to celebrate his 400th Premier League appearance.

The game was pretty one-sided after that. Southampton lost their determination and had little chance to get the equalizer.  The game ended with Demba Ba’s excellent striker’s finish of a goal which came during the 90th minute. There were 6 minutes of extra time but the score remained the same.
