Chelsea Join United In Targeting Serie A Club Captain As They Look To Strengthen Backline

Chelsea are monitoring AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli, according to Calciomercato.com.

The Italian website reports that the 24-year-old has also been scouted by the likes of Manchester United and Juventus in recent months.

Chelsea will likely be able to spend during the summer transfer window as their transfer ban will be delayed so their appeal can be heard.

With David Luiz and captain Gary Cahill’s contract expiring at the end of the season, a move for another high profile centre-back is highly probable.

However, Romagnoli may not be interested in leaving the San Siro. The Italian international is currently the Rossoneri’s captain and has previously rejected overtures from abroad.

The defender has been one of the Milan’s most consistent performers under manager Gennaro Gattuso this campaign, with the Italian club currently having the fourth best defensive record in Serie A.

Romagnoli has made 27 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring two goals.
