Chelsea Handed Boost In Striker Chase

Samuel Eto’o, the legendary Cameroon striker, worked with the ‘Special One’ for only one season at Inter; the historic 2009-10 season in which Jose Mourinho became the first man to lead an Italian side to a treble of Serie A, Champions League and Coppa Italia trophies.

Now manager at Chelsea once again, the 50-year-old Portuguese manager is targeting a striker as he looks to rejuvenate the squad he inherited from Rafael Benitez. The Blues have Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku on their books as orthodox forwards, however, Mourinho is desperate to add more firepower in that department.

The ex-Real Madrid manager has targeted a move for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney as he seeks to complete one last piece of transfer activity before the window closes. However, United are in no mood to sell one of their best players to a title rival, and have already rejected two bids from Chelsea for the unsettled striker.

Recent reports have suggested that Mourinho is looking at an alternative to Rooney, and has identified Anzhi forward Eto’o to spearhead Chelsea’s attack next season. Unlike Manchester United, Anzhi are willing to offload the 32-year-old as they seek to drastically reduce their wage bill with Eto’o being one of the world’s best paid players.

Along with Anzhi who are eager to sell, Chelsea have also been boosted by the news that the Cameroon international would jump at the chance to re-join Mourinho, but this time at Stamford Bridge.

According to The Mirror, he said, “There is only one Jose Mourinho. I have played under a lot of great coaches – but there is no other character in the game like Jose. He is one of the best coaches in the world – and we had a lot of success together at Inter Milan. I would like to have the chance to play under him again – because it is never boring when Jose is around.”

He added, “Chelsea are a great team. When we have all the offers on the table then I will discuss with my agent and see what my next step is.”

With United not ready to sell want-away Rooney, a move for Eto’o seems a sensible option as Mourinho has already worked with the player before. The player as well as the club are open to the possibility of a transfer, and if Chelsea’s interest is real, a deal between both clubs could take place very soon.
