Chelsea right-back Reece James was given the nod to start ahead of captain Cesar Azpilicueta for yesterday evening’s game against Sevilla and he did not let anyone down.
Sevilla appeared to be targeting the Blues’ right-hand side as they believed they could get at James defensively but the 20-year-old was more than up to the task, whilst offering a threat in the attacking third of the pitch as well.
The fullback delivered a devilish cross early in the match which no Chelsea player managed to get on the end of, and his energy meant he was running up and down the flank throughout the game. Supporters on Twitter were very happy with his display last night:
Reece is absolutely star!! a gem of a player

He was very good. His defensive awareness is improving every game and he's obviously very good in attack already.

I’m surprise how good he is at age 20

He's ready for the game since last season. With better tactical instructions he can reach WC levels in a year or two

He will go right to the top.

It’s clear that manager Frank Lampard is easing him into becoming the Blues’ first-choice right-back ahead of Azpilicueta. He has started four out of eight games so far this campaign, and he will almost certainly stay in the starting line up when they face Manchester United in the league this weekend.
