Wright Points Out Key Defensive Issue That Lampard Must Look To Rectify

Ex-Arsenal striker Ian Wright believes Chelsea manager Frank Lampard must do away with zonal marking from corners following Leicester‘s goal against the Blues yesterday.

Wilfried Ndidi scored the equaliser for the Foxes, after heading in from a James Maddison corner. Speaking about the issue after the game as a TV pundit, Wright believes they may have more issues from corners if Lampard persists with the tactic:

“I’m not sure why he’s not going man-to-man at set-pieces because people will see they’re vulnerable in that respect. You saw it there. He’s [Ndidi] standing in an area where you’d much rather someone pick him up.

“When you’ve got a running jump if the ball is good, it’s very difficult to stop somebody. And the ball was fantastic from Maddison.”

Zonal marking from corners is employed by most managers these days, and it would be a surprise if Lampard makes a drastic change on that front so early in the season.

Usually, a mix of man to man and zonal marking is the preferred method. You man-mark the most dangerous players in the air while also marking danger areas zonally.

That could be something that Lampard looks at in the future, but it may have not prevented Ndidi from scoring, as he isn’t known for his aerial ability.
