Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has made it clear that he wants to join Chelsea, rather than Manchester United, this summer, according to Sport.

The Catalan newspaper claims that the Red Devils have agreed a €80m (£68m) fee for the Dutchman but the player is said to have told Barca that he “would only agree to leave if it is for Chelsea.”

As things stand, the Blues have not made a bid for de Jong and they are unlikely to match United’s offer even if they do firm up their interest before the transfer window closes next month.

Sport reports that unless “Chelsea gets smart” in terms of meeting Barcelona’s asking price, it is more than likely that de Jong will stay at the Camp Nou.

It should be pointed out that de Jong’s situation is complicated even further by the fact that he believes he is owed money by Barca. He deferred payments from his contract to help the La Liga side financially during the global health crisis and he wants to be compensated before he agrees to move teams. With that being the case, Chelsea may be wise to steer clear of him.
