Willian says life was ‘difficult’ at Chelsea last season as Brazilian fuels exit rumours

Chelsea forward Willian has revealed the difficulties he faced at Stamford Bridge last season, fuelling rumours that he will leave the club this summer.

Willian found himself a bit part player at Chelsea last term, starting just over half of the Blues Premier League games and making only three starts in the League Cup too.

He was also left out of the starting XI for Chelsea’s FA Cup final victory over Manchester United back in May.

Willian’s reaction to his omission caused controversy amongst the club’s fans, the Brazil international appearing to block out manager Antonio Conte from a photo of the team lifting the trophy on his Instagram.

And now the forward, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, has spoken publicly of his frustration at The Bridge last year.

“I was happy with my performances throughout the season,” he told reporters. “I played very well. I always try to do my best. I always try to work hard. Sometimes to stay on the bench is difficult.

“I respect the decision of the manager who thinks that and I have nothing more to say about my club. I now want to focus here on the national team, on the World Cup. I am ready for it.”

Reports suggest former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is keen on a re-union with Willian, and could be ready to lodge a hefty bid to bring him to Old Trafford in the coming months.

Reports also suggest that United forward Anthony Martial could be used as a makeweight for the Brazilian, with the France international understood to be ready to leave the Red Devils this summer after a difficult season.

Willian however remains coy on his future, and says he is focused on the World Cup, as well as improving at Chelsea.

“I had a good season with Chelsea, winning the best player of the season for my team, I was very happy with that,” he added. “The important thing is to follow up. I have to keep getting better.”
