Willian In And Barkley Out: Chelsea’s Predicted XI To Face Sheffield United

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has limited room to make changes due to the injury problems that the Blues currently face. They have eight players on the treatment table.

It means that there will be relatively few alterations from the team that won 3-2 against Norwich City last weekend, and he could even name an unchanged side for the game against Sheffield United.

Goalkeeper And Defence

The five players that have started the season, Kepa, Azpilicueta, Zouma, Christensen and Emerson at the back are almost certain to start tomorrow. Lampard has confirmed that Antonio Rudiger is not ready to play and is continuing to build up his fitness with the Under 23s.

Reece James is still recovering from surgery to fix damaged ankle ligaments, and despite coming on as a substitute against Norwich, Marcos Alonso is unlikely to displace Emerson at left-back.

Midfield

Fans will be delighted to hear that Mason Mount is fit to start against the Blades. The midfielder picked up a knock to his calf in the final minutes of the Norwich victory but he has fully recovered.

It is not such good news for Pedro. The Spaniard was injured in the warm-up at Carrow Road and had to be replaced by Ross Barkley in the starting line up. He will need more time to recover from a hamstring strain.

With that being the case, it remains to be seen if Lampard will persist with Mount playing from the left and Barkley in the number 10 role. The 25-year-old didn’t play well in the first 45 minutes but he did improve in the second half.

Lampard could push Mount centrally and then move Willian into his favoured position on the left-wing. The 31-year-old needs game time after a whole summer sidelined with injury, and it could be a good match to throw him in. He will need to improve on his brief cameo in the 1-1 draw against Leicester.

N’Gol Kante has been ruled out so Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho will likely continue in the centre of the pitch.

Forward

After his brace against Norwich, there can be no dispute over who will get the nod upfront. Tammy Abraham is fully deserving of a long spell as the first choice number nine. Olivier Giroud will have to wait for his chance, while Michy Batshuayi continues to be on the periphery.
