We’ve all heard the rumours by now – Mauricio Pochettino is currently the favourite for the incumbent Chelsea manager role. Should he sign for the Blues, he will succeed Frank Lampard at the dawn of the new campaign.

In some ways, the appointment of the former Spurs boss is a very positive one. For starters, he is already accustomed to the Premier League – he knows what works and what doesn’t in the top flight of English football.

Additionally, Pochettino is a huge proponent of high-intensity pressing. It’s a tactic that is used by the majority of the top teams, including Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool. Moreover, the Argentinian also places a large emphasis on fitness as part of his coaching regime, to ensure that his players can press hard over the course of ninety minutes.

However, there are certain problems that Chelsea may encounter with Pochettino at the helm. He seems best suited to running tightly-knit operations with comparatively smaller squads – similar to what he had at Southampton and Tottenham. Chelsea are far from this – the Blues currently have a bloated squad that requires trimming in some areas and bolstering in others.

Pochettino’s last job, when he managed PSG, has to go down as a failure. Many put his lack of success with the Parisians as an inability to manage a large squad – the same thing could very easily happen at Chelsea if the Blues have another turbulent transfer window in the summer.

Perhaps most crucially, Pochettino’s record for winning trophies is scant at best. As manager, he has won just two major trophies – the French Cup in 2020 and the Ligue 1 title in 2021.

If Pochettino is to have a successful career at Chelsea, he will need to hit the ground running immediately to win over the fans. He isn’t a terrible option – but there may be more suitable coaches available for the role.
