Who should Chelsea sign to strengthen their squad?

With the English summer transfer window in full swing, many Premier League clubs have acted fast to secure some early signings to get ahead of their rival for the upcoming season.

Manchester United have already spent upwards of £70m, while Liverpool and Arsenal have each made significant movements within the market in order to push for glory next season. City don’t exactly need too much strengthening, but are known to be in the market for a central midfielder and a winger at the very least.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have been fairly quiet so far this summer, and other than managerially they haven’t really been hugely linked with any incomings to the team.

We’ve compiled five of the Blues’ top transfer targets this year with a short profile on each of them, explaining why Chelsea should go all out to bring them to Stamford Bridge. If you’re sold on a particular target, be sure to leave a vote on our poll situated at the end of the article.

Mauro Icardi

The 25-year-old striker is one of the deadliest in world football. Shockingly, the Argentine won’t be in Russia for the World Cup, but with the likes of Messi, Higuain and Aguero to contend with it was never going to be easy. Currently at Serie A side Inter Milan, Icardi has found the net over 100 times in just 150 appearances, most recently scoring 29 goals in 34 appearances. Chelsea look likely to invest in a forward this summer with question marks over the future of Alvaro Morata, so could Icardi be the man to lead the line at Stamford Bridge?

Robert Lewandowski

Lewandowski is undoubtedly one of the finest strikers in the world. He would be a shoe-in at pretty much every club, but with the 29-year-old being heavily linked with a move away from Bayern Munich – where he has scored 106 goals in 126 appearances – a move to England has been largely touted. Chelsea are known admirers of the Polish international, and it is believed that the hit-man would cost less than any potential deal for Icardi.

Kalidou Koulibaly

Koulibaly is a fierce centre-back who plays his football at Serie A side Napoli, as well as the Senegal national team. He has made over 120 appearances for the Italian giants, scoring 8 goals in the process but most notably putting in impressive defensive shifts that has helped to make his name as one of the most solid defender’s in the world. At 26, Koulibaly is nearing the peak of his career and a move to Chelsea would make perfect sense for both parties. The ageing Gary Cahill, as well as the uncertainty surrounding David Luiz’s future could make a cente-back signing at the Blues more likely than any other position.

Alessandro Florenzi

Another Serie A target, this time in the form of Roma midfielder Florenzi. It is unclear where the Italian would fit in at Chelsea, but it is more than likely that he would be deployed at right wing-back. The 27-year-old has shone for Roma since joining 7 years ago, making 28 caps for Italy in the process. The Blues could do with extra cover at right-back, with Zappacosta already being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge and Victor Moses’ place in the team being uncertain if Antonio Conte departs.

Gelson Martins

Martins is one of the most sought-after wingers in football at the moment, with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea just a few of the clubs around Europe hoping to snap him up. The Portuguese is easily one of Europe’s most exciting wingers, with the 23-year-old managing 13 goals and 13 assists across all competitions last season. Chelsea could do with someone of Martins’ calibre, especially if Willian is to leave as rumours suggest.
