Who Is Sergio Reguilon? Four Facts About Chelsea’s Left Back Target

Chelsea are interested in Real Madrid fullback Sergio Reguilon, according to reports in both the English and Spanish media.

The 23-year-old is being eyed as a cheaper alternative to Leicester’s Ben Chilwell, with the Foxes said to be demanding up to £80m for the defender.

Reguilon is also attracting interest from the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Everton, while he was also linked with Arsenal back in April.

So what do we know about the Spaniard? Press the next page as we go through four facts about the left-back.

Reguilon came through Real’s academy but had to wait for his chance

The defender was snapped up by Real as a young boy all the way back in 2005. He made his way up the youth ranks before making his debut for Real Madrid’s B team in 2015.

After two loan spells at lower league outfit Logrones, he was handed his first-team debut by Real in a Champions League game against CSKA Moscow in October 2018.

He had a superb spell on loan at Sevilla

Following Ferland Mendy’s arrival from Lyon last summer, it was decided that Reguilon’s best chance of first-team football was to go out on loan.

The fullback joined up with Julen Lopetegui at Sevilla, the man who gave him his debut when he was manager at the Bernabeu a year before. The move worked out, having scored two goals and contributed four assists in 34 appearances for the La Liga side.

Reguilon is an excellent crosser of the ball

One of the 23-year-old’s most notable characteristics is his excellent crossing ability. Although Marcos Alonso also has a decent delivery of the ball, his fellow Spaniard is better defensively.

With that being the case, manager Frank Lampard would certainly prefer having someone like Reguilon who can provide something in both defence and attack.

He does not have a future at Real

Ferland Mendy’s first season at the Bernabeu has proven to be a success and many now see him as the long-term successor to Marcelo. The Brazilian is also still at the club so there is very little room for another left-back.

Reguilon will need to leave Real this summer in order to get more first-team football, either on loan once again or on a permanent basis.
