Who Is Joakim Maehle? Four Things You Need To Know About The Reported Chelsea Target

Chelsea have taken an interest in Atalanta wingback Joakim Maehle, according to reports in the Italian media.

The defender has been one of Denmark’s standout players at the Euros, with the Scandinavian country having reached the quarter-final stages of the competition.

Not too many fans would have heard much about Maehle before the tournament so we have decided to put this list together to give people some insight into the player’s career.

Press the next page as we go through four things you need to know about the Danish international.

He is a specialist wingback

Although Maehle did start his career playing in defence as a right-back, he has gradually turned himself into a wingback over the past year or so.

From October last year, the 24-year-old has played almost exclusively in a five at the back system, with the bulk of his appearances as a fullback coming when he has played for Denmark. It means he should fit perfectly into Thomas Tuchel’s team.

Maehle only moved to Atalanta in January

One of the reasons why Chelsea’s interest in the Danish international is so surprising is the fact that he only made the switch to Atalanta from Racing Genk at the start of this year.

Maehle has been a regular starter for the Serie A side, though, providing two assists in 25 appearances, and helping them to finish third in the table.

He is likely to cost a lot more than €10m

Atalanta snapped up Maehle for a rather modest fee in the January transfer window and the Italian club are likely to demand double or treble what they paid for the player.

Not only has he performed well domestically, but his displays for Denmark at the European Championships will also add to his asking price. The wingback has scored for his country in his last two matches against Russia and Wales.

Maehle is right-footed despite playing on the left-wing for Denmark

Some supporters may be asking why Chelsea would be going after a left-wingback considering the club already have the likes of Ben Chilwell, Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso in the first-team squad.

However, it must be pointed out that Maehle only plays in that position for his country, and he is ostensibly a right-sided player. In that context, the Blues’ interest in the Dane makes more sense, considering they have been pursuing Inter Milan’s Achraf Hakimi up until recently.
