What To Expect From Chelsea In 2016?

For now, no one believes that Guus Hiddink is here to stay. Named manager until the end of the 2015-2016 season, the Dutchman is probably going to have a lot of wiggle room in terms of staff and probably in terms of player transfers. He will also have to deal with current issues such as those regarding Fabregas and Costa who got booed by Chelsea fans some of whom probably think that the Spaniards contributed to Mourinho’s departure. Even though the Special One had a difficult time at the end of his second term with the Blues, he did not face too much hate from Blues fans who mostly blamed players rather than the coach. All-in-all there are a lot of things that need to be addressed by Hiddink. Here’s a list of things that might be on the manager’s list:

  1. According to Metro, Hiddink could bring former Chelsea star Didier Drogba to Stamford Bridge. The Dutchman, Didier and Abramovich were spotted sitting next to another during the clash against Sunderland. Bringing the Ivorian to the club would be a smart move and might just calm spirits. The striker has strong leadership skills and could also influence players in a positive way not just youngsters – Drogba is rumored to start managing Chelsea’s youth team.
  2. Hiddink is also expected to change tactics – there is much to say about this manager who evolved during his managerial career from a 5-3-2 in his PSV days to a 4-4-1-1 while managing the Netherlands to finally stabilize to a 4-3-3 with a rather defensive midfield which has been his preferred formation for the past decade. Back in the day when he managed Chelsea he used Ballack, Lampard and Essien down the middle. Now we will probably see Matic, Oscar and Fabregas being assigned with more defensive tasks. Fans may remember Malouda and Kalou who often helped the defense and turned the formation into a 4-5-1. Sure, then you had Drogba who handled defenses by himself so now Hazard and Pedro or Willian could get different instructions.
  3. Transfers – With Hiddink’s arrival, it is hard to see any big transfers happening. Some of the players who are on loan could return just to be given one last chance. It is very difficult to tell what is going to happen this winter and what new names will start making the first team list.

It is doubtful that things will get any worse now that Hiddink is in charge and it is likely he will help to galvanise and stabilise the Blues with a trophy win not a proposition that should be taken lightly.
